Yellowstone National Park closes for the season in early winter at this time the park is peaceful, almost deserted. There are few left to witness the natural beauty of this once active caldera. Snow hides in shady patches at high altitudes, charred evergreens display evidence of the region’s fire cycle, icy mountain waters toss themselves against rocks and shores, and steaming paint pots and geothermal vents bubble and hiss, breathing giant clouds of steam against a brilliant, low-hanging autumn sun. For those willing to brave the cold and isolation a world of beauty awaits.
